North Cornwall is a brilliant place for a family holiday, particularly if your children prefer beaches, exploring and outdoor adventures to spending the week indoors.
From rock pooling and learning to surf to lakeside adventures and family attractions, there’s plenty to keep children of different ages entertained around Bude. Better still, many of the best days out don’t need much planning at all.
Here are some of our favourite ideas for things to do with kids while staying in this part of North Cornwall.
A trip to Bude wouldn’t be complete without at least one proper beach day.
The coastline around Bude has plenty of options for families, whether your plans involve building sandcastles, exploring rock pools, bodyboarding or simply finding somewhere for a picnic.
Sandymouth is our closest beach and a favourite with families, while Summerleaze and Crooklets in Bude are also well worth exploring.
We’ve covered the different options in more detail in our guide to the best beaches near Bude.
Sitting beneath the cliffs at Summerleaze Beach, Bude Sea Pool offers a different way to enjoy the water.
The semi-natural tidal pool has been part of Bude since the 1930s and is free to use, making it an easy addition to a day at Summerleaze. Because conditions and supervision remain your own responsibility, families should always check the pool and weather conditions before swimming.
It’s a particularly nice option if you’re spending the day exploring Bude rather than travelling further afield.
For a change from the coast, head inland to Tamar Lakes near Kilkhampton.
There are waymarked walks around the lakes, wildlife to look out for and a children’s play area. Families wanting something more adventurous can also find activities including kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding at Upper Tamar Lake.
It’s a good option when you want an active day without heading to the beach, and its proximity to Broxwater makes it particularly easy to fit into your stay.
Bude’s coastline is well known for surfing, and a family holiday can be a great opportunity to give it a try.
Local surf schools offer lessons and equipment hire for different abilities, so complete beginners don’t have to miss out. If surfing sounds a little ambitious, grabbing a bodyboard and enjoying the shallows can be just as much fun.
Always choose beaches and activities appropriate for your children’s ages and swimming ability, and pay attention to lifeguard advice and local conditions.
For a full family day out, The Milky Way Adventure Park sits just across the border in North Devon and is within easy reach of Bude.
There are rides, adventure and soft-play areas, live entertainment and plenty of indoor attractions, making this a particularly useful option when the Cornish weather isn’t cooperating.
Because opening days and individual attractions vary throughout the year, we’d recommend checking their current calendar before setting off.
Another option across the border in North Devon is The BIG Sheep.
As the name suggests, animals are a big part of the experience, but there are also rides, play areas and live shows. Its large indoor play area also makes it worth remembering for those inevitable rainy holiday days.
Again, check opening times and seasonal attractions before travelling.
You certainly don’t need to attempt a huge hike to enjoy the South West Coast Path with children.
Choosing a shorter section gives the whole family the chance to experience North Cornwall’s cliffs, sea views and beaches without turning the day into an endurance test.
Take snacks, allow plenty of time for stops and choose a route appropriate for the youngest member of the family. You can find more ideas for exploring the surrounding area on our North Cornwall location guide.
